 Abstract:  Photocopies of 118 documents, chiefly official correspondence and printed orders related to Captain Nicholas Nolan, 10th Cavalry, from 1878 to 1880. Letters from the winter of 1879 concern the escort and protection of reservation Indians on a hunting expedition, including Kiowas, Comanches and Pawnees. In the summer and fall of 1880, while stationed at Fort Quitman, Texas, Nolan cooperated with Mexican forces along the Rio Grande River, in the pursuit of Indians with the Apache chief, Victorio. Correspondents include Henry O. Flipper and P.B. Hunt.

 Abstract:  The 1st Regiment Cavalry of Colorado was made up of volunteers from Colorado citizenry. It was organized in Denver in 1861, having been converted to cavalry from an infantry unit. Twenty-one items include special orders, reports, monthly returns by the quartermaster, invoices, inventories, muster rolls, and letters. The bulk of the collection is comprised of operational documents related to equipment and supplies for the regiment.

 Abstract:  Contains two holograph duplicate invoices for building materials and tools sent for the construction of "the Fort on the River Gila." The invoices were signed and dated by Bvt. Lt. Col. S. McRee, Quartermaster, U.S. Army, St. Louis, Mo. on May 12 and June 7, 1849. The invoice dated June 7 consists of one leaf; that of May 12, consists of three pages. The lists include weights and quantities for diverse items such as quarry picks, wheel segments, paint brushes, cooking stoves, door locks, glue and glue pots, grind stones, linseed oil, plows, window glass, plugs of feathers, and white lead. Items were sent to an unnamed "Acting Quartermaster," and items not received were so noted.

 Abstract:  Photocopy of a 35-page holographic diary by Dodge; it recounts his adventures beginning in New Bedford, Mass., aboard the whaling ship, "Russell," from 1831-1834. He describes the Pacific voyage including South American ports, whale hunting procedures, and the environmental importance of the Galapagos Islands. Also present is a typed transcription of the diary by John Dunklee and Alan Newton of the Geography Dept., University of Arizona. It contains an introduction with background information, annotations, and a map of the voyage.

 Abstract:  Located at the border of Washington and Oregon, it was a Hudson Bay Company trading post from 1829-1846. One portfolio containing printed and holographic items related primarily to the 4th Infantry, based at Fort Vancouver. The earliest material consists of nine monthly post returns from 1854, signed by the commanding officer, Lt. Col. Benjamin Louis Eulalie de Bonneville. These post returns list officers by name; enlisted men by count; civil employees, their duties, and rate of pay; official communications received; also the names of anyone sick, or in confinement for desertion. A food survey report from 1856 is concerned with rotten pork, hard bread, and moldy coffee. Later correspondence, special orders, and general orders date from 1860 to 1866.

 Abstract:  Holograph manuscript, in pencil, of the short story, Courage. It consists of eight leaves and contains McCutcheon's edits. The story concerns a wounded World War I soldier recalling his battle experiences, while recuperating in a French military hospital. The last page is signed and dated, December 23, 1917; however, a note at the beginning of the story says it was started December 20, 1916 and completed December 22. A typescript of the original story is included.

 Abstract:  John Ruskin, 1819-1900, was an English art critic, social reformer, and author. Portfolio contains 12 signed holograph letters sent by Ruskin to William Roscoe Osler and his father, T. Smith Osler, 1873 to 1879; 12 others are to his friend Charles H. Woodd, circa 1850 to 1879. Several of the letters are undated. Also included are typewritten transcripts of the letters to the Oslers, which concern William's career in art.
