Serving in the Union Army during the Civil War where he reached the rank of General. Later, he served in the U.S. Interior Department as railroad surveyor and engineer. Much of the correspondence pertains to his work with the Memphis and El Paso Railroad, later to become the Texas Pacific Railroad where he served as Chief of Engineers. This manuscript collection is arranged in five series which run chronologically and follow English's political progression from Coconino County Supervisor, to Representative in the Arizona House, to member of the Arizona Senate, and finally to Congresswoman in the United States House of Representatives.
