1860-2021 ead | | | Date(s): | 1860-2021 | | | Abstract: | The Empire Ranch Foundation (ERF) is a non-profit organization,
established in 1997, that works in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
to protect, restore, and sustain the historical buildings and landscapes of the Empire
Ranch. The Empire Ranch was established in 1876 and has been a working cattle ranch
since, owned by two pioneer families: The Vails (1876-1928) and the Boices (1928-1969).
The Empire Ranch was later owned by corporations before being transfered to the Bureau
of Land Management, who enforces the preservation of the historic site. In 1997, the ERF
was established to help the BLM with preservation projects while also making sure the
site is still accessible to the general public. The materials in this collection are
from the ERF and reflect their daily operations, preservation projects, research
materials, oral histories, events, and other materials. Materials remain in the original
order as provided by the Empire Ranch Foundation upon their donation to Special
Collections. | | | Repository: | University of Arizona Libraries, Special Collections | | | Subjects: | Ranches -- Arizona | Business Enterprises -- Arizona -- Archives | | | Matches: 56 hit(s)

5 | Author: | Whipple, Charles | Requires cookie* | | Title: | Charles Whipple Correspondence Collection
1860-1900 ead | | | Date(s): | 1860-1900 | | | Abstract: | This is a collection of letters and accompanying envelopes (covers) primarily written during the Civil War, by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Whipple of the 19th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, to his daughter Rosa C. Whipple of Eau Claire Wisconsin. Whipple writes from his postings in Racine, Wisconsin and then from the areas around Hampton and Norfolk, Virginia where he was assigned to the Command of Fort Norfolk and later as captain of the “General Jessup” gunboat. A letter from 1866 indicates that Whipple became involved in a mining venture in Illinois after the War. By 1877, Whipple had moved on to Ehrenberg, Arizona Territory where he appears to have worked as a clerk at “F.E. Farrington and Co. Dealers in General Merchandise and Freight Forwarding”. The letters from Ehrenberg were often sent using Wells Fargo stationery. Whipple’s Civil War letters give a picture of life at Fort Norfolk, and a few of them show the racism inherent at the time, even amongst Union soldiers. Many of the letters indicate Whipple’s frustration with the War and his desire to return home. The letters from Ehrenberg mention a number of ventures he hopes will be profitable, although by this time he is approaching 60 years of age. Also included in the collection are a few letters from Whipple’s children, Rosa C. Whipple, Henry Clinton Whipple and Stella Whipple Hart. There are also related documents such as Whipple’s 1862 appointment certificate to the 19th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and his 1874 license to practice law issued by San Diego County. | | | Repository: | Postal History Foundation, Peggy J. correspondence,
1860-1883 ead | | | Date(s): | 1860-1883 | | | Abstract: | This collection contains one series, correspondence. It is
comprised of 57 letters, 34 of which were written by George Cranston, primarily
to his sister, Gertrude. 14 of these letters relate Cranston's experiences as a
soldier in the Arizona Territory, from 1866 to 1870. Cranston was stationed at
Fort Yuma, Camp Lowell, Fort Grant, Camp Tubac and Camp Crittenden, and his
letters reveal the privations of a soldier's life, the uncertainties of living
on the frontier, and the fear of Indian attacks. Leaving the army and Arizona
in 1870, the letters continue with Cranston's travels in New Mexico, Kansas and
Texas. The remaining letters, the bulk of which are addressed to Gertrude, are
correspondence from other Cranston siblings, and letters from James Cranston,
their father. Many of these are accounts of family activities and events,
others reveal some of the emotional undercurrents in family life. | | | Repository: | University of Arizona Libraries, Special Collections | | | Subjects: | Apache Indians -- Wars | Frontier and pioneer life -- Arizona | | | Matches: 1 hit(s)
