photographs, postcards, and notes. The bulk of the collection is correspondence
and records relating to the establishment and operation of missions and
schools, primarily at St. Michaels. These document activity between Franciscan
friars, the Navajo population, Catholic organizations, the U. S. Government,
and the Land Commissioner of the Santa Fe Pacific Railroad Company. Included
are materials on Navajo land allotments, education, language, social
conditions, government and church relations, tourism, and origins of the Navajo

Included also are photographs that consist of images created by various Franciscan friars of the Saint Barbara Providence of the Order of Franciscan Friars depicting scenes from various Indian reservations in Arizona and Southern California. The Papers in the first subgroup include biographical information, correspondence, and drafts of 26 of his manuscripts, including Bloody Trails of the Old Southwest and Adventures in Navajoland. The photographs are the second subgroup in this collection, this uncludes, black-and-white photographs which cover the years 1902-1929. The bulk of them are mounted and deal with Forrest's travels in the West, especially his visits among the Indians of Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. Roca Papers and Photographs contains materials which document Jesuit churches throughout the Northern Mexico states of Sonora and Chihuahua. The collection consists of two series, Photographs and Papers. The first series, Photographs (1887-1965, bulk 1955-1965) consists of 156 photographs featured in Paths of the Padres through Sonora: An Illustrated History & Guide to Its Spanish Churches published by the Arizona Pioneers’ Historical Society in 1967 with accompanying maps. The second series, Papers (1977), contains 4 manuscript versions of Spanish Jesuit Churches in Mexico’s Tarahumara published by the University of Arizona Press in 1979.
