They were collected as part of an ethnographic study of the New Age practice called "channeling," essentially a contemporary version of spirit meduimship in which human beings serve as channels for information said to come from a range of spiritual beings. This project culminated in several journal articles, book chapters, and one monograph, The Channeling Zone: American Spirituality in an Anxious Age (Harvard University Press, 1997).

Day (1879-1918), Samuel Day, Jr. (1889-1944), United States deputy Marshall. The collection includes information on Navajo culture, stories and legends; the looting of Canyon del Muerta, and the Frank Dugan murder. The collection also contains 91 photographs depicting trading posts and eastern Arizona scenes.
