 Abstract:  The George Hebard Maxwell Papers consists of 12 manuscript boxes that cover the range of Maxwell's work with water reclamation. The collection is composed primarily of correspondence between Maxwell and his associates. Speeches, circulars, reports, meeting notes, forms, form letters, financial documents (invoices, order forms, statements of costs), clippings and printed matter (promotional literature, copies of publications) are also included. Of particular interest are several handwritten drafts of Mr. Maxwell’s book Golden Rivers and Treasure Vallies.

 Abstract:  The Wayne T. Pratt Papers consist primarily of publications, correspondence, transcripts, photographs, and other materials documenting issues facing Native American communities and educators of Native American children. Among the subjects shown are the Bureau of Indian Affairs, schools for Native children, the education of future teachers of Native children, the sensitivity of educators to cultural issues, mid to late twentieth century trends in Native education, and the Johnson-O'Malley plan to aid local schools. Although the materials in the collection date from 1903 to 1990, the bulk of the collection was created between 1953 and 1988.

 Abstract:  Field notebooks, reprint articles, speeches, survey abstracts, photographs, diaries, and correspondence pertaining to Shantz's interests in worldwide agriculture and botany. Shantz's various trips to Africa resulted in extensive field notes, including those for the Smithsonian African Expedition, 1919 to 1920, and the African Education Commission, 1923 to 1924. Background material he collected about Africa encompasses maps; postcards; dictionaries and primers on languages, including Swahili; also, articles on the people, the areas they inhabited, and specific problems, such as the tsetse fly, sleeping sickness, forced labor, and race relations. Photographs of his travels from the Cape to Cairo depict the Nile, Egyptian ruins, wild and domestic animals, vegetation and the landscape, villages and cities, and people in tribal dress. Communal activities documented include cultivation, thatching roofs, building a road, and weaving a large bamboo mat to cover a bridge walkway.
