At the University of Arizona, the project was conducted through the Arizona State Museum and coordinated by Bernard “Bunny” Fontana, an anthropologist who was the museum’s Director of Ethnology at the time. The project resulted in the collection of 615 interviews, representing 33 different tribal groups. The bulk of the collection is from Apache, Navajo, Pima, Tohono O'Odham, and Yaqui consultants. Other tribes from Arizona and Mexico are also represented: including the Mohave, Hopi, Seri, Tarahumara, and Yavapai. The interviews discuss personal and family histories, along with topics such as social culture, education, folklore, health and health care, history, language, and religion. Interviews with Acoma, Apache, Chiricahua, Chemehuevi, Chontal, Dakota, Inuit, Havasupai, Hualapai, Juaneño, Maricopa, Mexican, Mormon, Muslim, Mohave, Navajo, Pima, Quechua, San Juan, Santa Clara, Seri, Spanish-American, Tarahumara, Tewa, Tohono O'Odham, Tiwa, Western Apache, Yaqui, Yavapai, and Yuman interviewees.

diaries of William Wallace and Ada Bass (1894-1929), Business Correspondence

1954-1956), Personal Correspondence and Family History (1849-1963), Manuscripts
(1881-1919), Scrapbooks, (1891-1903), and Printed Material (1864-1976). The oral
history collection consists of two series. The first includes nine cassette tapes of
interviews with W.G. Bass, W.W. Bass' son with accompanying transcripts. The second
includes tapes of interviews with Ed Kahle (driver of automobile for W.W. Bass),
Harry Phillips (hauled ore for W.W. Bass) and Jack Fuss (worked for W.W. Bass for a
year). The photograph collection consists of 24 boxes (13.5 linear feet) of prints,
lantern slides, and glass plate negatives. There are nineteen boxes of photographic
prints, dealing primarily with W.W. Bass and the Bass family. The majority of the
photographs were taken in the Grand canyon where the Bass' camps, mines, and homes
were located, and include images of and around the White House, Tin House, Bass
Camp, Bass Cave, Shinumo Camp, and Rock Camp. Some photographs portray Ada's family
and home in New York. There are numerous images of Havasupai Indians, including
individuals (Chicakpanage and many unidentified), school children, homes, dancers
and a sweat lodge. In several of these, Bass family members, particularly W.W. Bass,
are present. There are also a few photographs of Navajo and Hopi Indians, including

Letters in the collection include: a letter from a teacher describing Christmas celebrations and social events in 1907 in Alma; letters about the economy (lumber, farming, mining), horses and people and a postcard, from Copperton, 1905; a letter from a German speaking soldier at, Fort Stanton, 1886; a letter about Statehood Day and taxes (postmarked Lakewood, 1912); a letter about house construction in Madison; a letter saying “thanks for the tobacco” and about organizing a Breeder’s Association in Mesilla, 1906; a letter with details of raising and selling hogs, Ruidoso, 1911; a letter about bad condition of the church and school, Silver City, 1909; and a letter which is described as the writers “last correspondence from the New Mexico Territory”.

Heritage Foundation for surveying historic properties. Cleaning up the Granite Creek was another notable project.

was taken in as a temporary ward by Captain James Burns, who gave Hoomothya the anglicized name of Mike Burns. This collection

determined capacities for area ranches in cooperation with the CCC and WPA. He became an area conservationist overseeing
range management issues for five northern Arizona counties and worked with dozens of area ranchers to promote modern
scientific methods of ranch management. He served in Vietnam as an agricultural advisor. He was highly involved in the

Survey, was founded in 1883 by the Arizona legislature as the Office of the
Territorial Geologist. Since its founding, the Arizona Geological Survey has been
several Territorial and State Geologic Agencies, including the Arizona Bureau of
Mines from 1915 to 1977. In 1893, the University of Arizona acquired the role of
geologic mapping and reporting and still maintains this mission with the Arizona
Geological Survey. This collection contains three production data logs from the
Arizona Bureau of Mines with information about the production of copper, gold, lead,
