encompasses maps; postcards; dictionaries and primers on languages, including
Swahili; also, articles on the people, the areas they inhabited, and specific
problems, such as the tsetse fly, sleeping sickness, forced labor, and race
relations. Photographs of his travels from the Cape to Cairo depict the Nile,
Egyptian ruins, wild and domestic animals, vegetation and the landscape,

Sherman for use in their books Ghost Towns of Arizona and Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of New Mexico. Early photographs, comprising about thirty percent of the collection, were reproduced from various Arizona and New Mexico archives. These span from 1865 to 1953 but most were taken between 1880 and 1920. The majority of the photographs, however, were taken by the Shermans between 1964 and 1969 during their research for their books. The images, from the 1960s, are well identified and mainly show abandoned buildings, mine equipment, cemeteries, and landscapes. Earlier photographs may also show buildings and equipment but also present for some towns are images of activities, residents and founders, and newspaper advertisements. studied art at the Corcoran School in Washington, D.C. and the St. Louis School of Fine

the University of Arizona in 1954. He designed stage sets for theater productions,
painted local landscapes, and became known for creating woodblock prints. The collection
consists of 11 signed and/or numbered linocut prints by Channing Smith, the King's Grant
graphic novel, 50 loose linocut prints, 23 pencil studies on paper, and 9 blank but
titled pages. It also consists of 6 Arizona scene linoleum blocks, 6 Boy and Girl
